The rounded leaves mean it's definitely not a common hawthorn, crataegus monogyna. I don't know of any less common hawthorn species that are naturalised in SA and have rounded leaves. I also don't know much about wild prunus in SA either but doesn't look like many common prunus leaves I've seen.
It might be African Boxthorn?

Hawthorn and Blackthorn make great bonsai but like I said, I don't think it's either of them, as for any other tree with thorns in existence, I'm sure many (quince, pomegranate etc) have desirable characteristics for bonsai, I would also hazzard a guess that many (most?) trees/shrubs with thorns don't. As we are no closer to a positive ID I can't really help any more than that. You've seen the tree, does it have any favourable characteristics? Small leaves, short internodes, interesting bark, spreading root base, movement/interest down low? etc etc

The instant forest is a wild rose with rose hips. The one before that is the dreaded box thorn, they bite!
As for if they are worth depends on your taste, imagination and time n blood you want to put into them

Those natives look good, but not a huge amount of roots and not a great time of year to dig 'em. Fingers crossed and keep us updated.

I'd leave the rose - looks pretty straight and boring - and would forget the boxthorn too unless it has some pretty interesting movement right down low. Aussie Bonsai Bloke has a couple of videos on boxthorn that he collected from his property if you're interested.

Thanks guys. I might leave the other natives until spring/summer. There are so many.
