Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
Assuming they have been kept close together, it's reasonable to assume the pollen from one tree has fertilised the other. JMs are monoecious, and therefore have the genetic instructions to self-pollinate, but in actual practice this rarely happens and is even rarer in angiosperms than conifers.
Without going into too much unnecessary detail, my point in bringing up the fact that these seeds will be F1 hybrids is the fact that TimS's seeds from his Mikawa Yatsubusa, Kashima, Coral Bark, and Arakawa will have almost certainly all cross-pollenated from each other, and the subsequent seedlings are therefore F1 hybrids of their respective parents cultivars. Of which parenthood is impossible to know, other than the tree they're collected from.
The anecdote I brought forward is that as per the MrMaple nursery in USA, their experience amongst thousands of JM and chance seedlings is that F2 hybrids, seedlings from a seedling, tend to display more a combination of unique characteristics that would be potentially valued for a new cultivar, more so than F1 hybrids.
Perhaps I'm optimistically dreaming, but I would one day like to see an Australian breeding program that aims to create a healthy vigorous cultivar that has characteristics ideal for bonsai, and is more adapt to local growing conditions than the mountains of Japan. In all reality this would probably take a life-time.

Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
You have pointed out that any seedlings of these named cultivars can be classed as f1 hybrids. But those cultivars are also the result of cross breeding, making them F1 hybrids themselves.
The definition of F2 is 'the result of self or cross pollination of F1 hybrids'. Therefore the seedlings of these named cultivars must be at least F2 hybrids.
But, if we accept that any cultivar is a hybrid of some sort then many of the named cultivars are the result of many, many generations of crossing and back crossing. Not sure what filial generation some could be but most will be way past F2.
Being genetically pedantic will not change the tendency for JM seedlings to be variable so definitely keep growing seedlings people and look out, not only for attractive leaf colour and shape but also for Aussie summer hardiness, short internodes and other bonsai friendly characteristics.

Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
No further cultivar JM will be available at this point. I will be able to collect straight species JM, but i will collect that and post availability later down the track.
My Kashima flowered like crazy but never produced seed so there won't be any Kashima available at all, the others aren't going to supply anywhere near enough seed to cover the requests already made.

Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
Just checking in ... as all I want for Xmas is my two front teeth, and if possible, some gingko seeds? Reading over this thread, realised I didn't say how many ... 20 if possible?

Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
FYI i have been unwell with some ongoing health issues since late last year. This has meant seed collection hasn't been something I've been able to do, so my apologies to everyone but i won't be going ahead with this.
I am however divesting myself of various Japanese Maples especially, but many other species young stock too, so have a squiz at the for-sale section and if you're in or able to travel to Melbourne feel free to reach out about any of them.
Cheers

Re: Would you want seeds from me this year?
I've got ginkgo seed if anyone's interested, cleaned, sterilised, and fresh from this season.
Did the community come to a consensus of what a fair price might be?
