Todays collection efforts

Post by kcpoole »

I found a site last week, ( council property) that has been earmarked and Surveyed for new housing developments.
Thru the bush there has been pushed a new trail full of wanton destruction, with trees just pushed over or chain sawed off to create the sightlines for the surveyors.
Lots of Natives and weed species will be bulldozed to make roads and building blocks for more urban sprawl.

Today I took the opportunity to gather a selection of available species to see if they collect OK before a big effort at the end of winter ( if they last that long ).

Also there are at least 3 different Privet varieties I saw there that will have trees worth collection.

forgot to add, they all came home and ore not potted up into Zeolite/Diatomite and have had a good soak with Seasol. Will see how they recover over the next few months and into spring.

Hey Ken,

Good pickings mate well done :tu: Let me know when you go on a dig as I would love to tag along....unless you prefer a solo effort

When looking for sites, do you hit up local council to find out what area's are being developed ? Or do you just get out on the beaten track and stumble across bulldozed patches ?

Keep up the top notch collecting

Matt

You didn't quite answer my question... I mean about going with you. Judging by your information, and that no-one in my area does bonsai (with about 2 or 3 exceptions) I'm assuming you live less than half an hour away from me. I'll let you have first pick, I just want to learn from someone who's been collecting yamadori for a while.

Collecting from the wild isnt hard to do some trees are fussy some like a good choppn an some have the right time to collect :tu: :tu: but when collecting the common thing you aim for is a good root ball ( not olives tho cut just below ground level :tu: ) . Its all about nowing your target coocarch google is your best friend here , i suggest start with easy stuff then work your way up to more difficult material . Collecting from the wild is very addictive     make sure you got a big back yard :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:

Uhh I would have said "Check your brake line" but yeah. I would like to go on a dig with someone experienced and not on my own, but if you want to keep the site all to yourself its ok, I don't hold grudges (or at least not all the time), i'll probably get another chance later in life. Hopefully before HSC (I seriously don't like studying)

Well I'm 16, but I would prefer to learn from someone, instead of from the internet. But if there's a site where I can go and dig trees, I would like to go, I doubt he'd take all the trees, I could just take whatever's left.
