Callicarpa Japonica - Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
I am interested in getting some under used/rare species more widely used in the Australian Bonsai Commmunity.
One of them is Callicarpa Japonica, not my tree but a great example of bonsai potential I have a couple of small plants, but due to their size (pencil thick) propagation potential is very limited. I have found out that there are a number of plants at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.

So...Who would like to go to the RBG in Melbourne ask permission and take some cuttings? I am happy to swap Ilex Serrata, Acer Palmatum Arakawa, or JBP Seeds.
If anyone is interested in doing a good deed for Australian Bonsai it'd be great to hear from you.

Permission But there is no body there on a Sunday to ask permission I tried them many years ago and found them painfully thin and slow to develop. The colour of the berries is spectacular. I'll see if my source still has them.Scott Roxburgh wrote:So...Who would like to go to the RBG in Melbourne ask permission and take some cuttings?1

Scott, The place where I used to get the cuttings was in a public park in Tweed Heads about 15 yrs ago. The next time that I am up that way I will check if the shrubs are still there. I have a suspicion that they might have succumbed to lack of care and water over the years. I will let you know.

Re: Callicarpa Japonica - Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
Hi Scott,
I have a couple of Callicarpa Japonica's, one of which is a Shohin twin trunk about 17cm high which is about to flower and is about 10years old and a couple of small rooted cutting taken as hard wood wood last year. I also have a larger nursery plant which I picked up recently which I will be placing layers on shortly.
I also saw some plants, about 12 -15" high in a nursery last week for $13.95, i think. If your interested I could purchase for you and I think Grant come to Melbopurne a couple of times a year, maybe he could collect them for you.
Hacki was correct they are slow to thicken unless planted in the ground and can have big leaves unless kept pruned once you have the size and shape you want. They seem to grow well from both soft and hard wood cutting.
I tried to sent you a pm when you first posted your item but it didn't seem to go through.
Oscar

You're a champ! I'd be very interested in either your cuttings or the nursery plants. I'd be keen on five of the nursery plants if you could pick them up.
Let me know your details and I'll transfer the cash to you.

No worries mate,Scott Roxburgh wrote:I just wanted to publically thank Joe for my Callicarpa Japonica seeds, and show how awesome Ausbonsai is!

Scott.
I had 3 germinate as well. Mine also appear verigated although the parent plant was not. Strange. Hopefully its just a phase and it grows out of it.
I did have to collect the seed from the ground below the plant as i was about a month late so hopefully they are the correct species. I am 80% sure they are.
I plan on collecting some more this autumn directly from the bush this time. I will let you know when i do.
Joe.

Re: Callicarpa Japonica - Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
As well as the ones from Joe, I actually received some seeds from a mate on Ausbonsai, and some cuttings from another mate in Melbourne!
I'll be repotting the cuttings soon, so I'll add to the thread.
