Syzigium cutting help

Post by Damian Bee »

Can anyone give me a few pointers on the preferred method and timing for Syzigium cuttings?

I want to grow a few dozen, (quite a few)

Cheers.

I have read the best time to do soft tip cuttings (8-10cm) is in December to May, although I think you could do these much earlier maybe around mid to late August with bottom heating, perhaps using an enclosed propagation tray... even the "No Fuss propagator"
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1274

Another common name for them is 'Christmas Bush" and recently people in Vic will often ask for as the 'Neighours be gone trees', thanks to some dodgy marketing :?
The Acmena smithii has also been refereed to as Lilly Pilly or Neighbours be gone....

Ahh Shoot !! Should remember that :-(

From what I ahve heard they are very easy to strike.
A good rooting hormone, put them into a sharp Mix and keep moist. Wait till spring, unless you have a warm spot to keep them

I would imagine that they are. I have had the top of one I cut of in a trunk chop and just stuck it in a bucket of water. It was very bushy with new growing tips it has not grown any roots yet but it is still growing almost a couple of months later.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

G'day Damian,

I have had excellent success striking Syzygium australe. When styling one I purchased from a nursery, a mate and I popped about 100 cuttings into trays. They were various sizes from 3mm think and 40mm high to 8mm thick and 60mm high. Each was dipped into a liquid hormone and stuck into an open mix. This was done in late January of this year and over 80% have survived.

Lilly pillies used to be classed as eugenias. Now they are classed in several genera, Acmena, Syzygium and Waterhousea. Confusing :?

Regards,
Steven

Thanks guys, I eagerly await temps above 20 degrees.

KC, remember I am in Melbourne so thee are no warm spots at the present
Reclassification of genus is always confusing but it is for the better so we can understand the plant world.
