Pine collection

Hello all am scoping out some pines to collect and wondering best advice in regards to how much foliage to keep? Best time to dig and any other tips that may help for this trees survival

There's lots of conflicting opinions on when and how to dig pines.
I've had success digging in autumn, winter and spring but never 100% survival.
I generally leave as much green as I'm comfortable with depending how many roots I get out. Many collectors tell us to leave as much green as possible but that does not give me any better rates than cut back.
