Absolutely backyard counts ! Most of my elms come from the backyard . If the apricot is a seedling there is probably some regression to the “ wild “ type , hence the thorns .

This photo is a bit of cheating really as it was dug last year (my only dig tree from 2019) and it is a Plum from a garden, a domestic dig and that is interesting as it has very few thorns unlike the wild plum that I dug a little while ago.
This has some movement and a reasonable nabari so good bones. With some carving, a trim and a few pieces of wire I am hopeful that this will be OK.

That looks more than ok now Watto. What a great score I really like it.

Great looking Plum Watto ,should power on quickly in your capable hands. Repotted my Goulburn Plums recently ,slowly getting there. That was a fun dig. Cheers John.

This is another plum. It grew twice the size from the time of digging to potting time. True story. Must be magic.
I had visions of a nice shohin bonsai coming from this but I fear it will never be a shohin but still it has some movement and interesting branching. Time will tell how it comes through.

Those who have not dug trees will still not believe this but I have also noticed similar increase in size between digging and potting. i always thought it was from removing the pressure of the soil which allows the trunks to expand

You could very well be correct Shibui, less contraction from the ground equals more expansion.
This one was growing amongst a heap of others, all long straight skinny ones and I thought it may have appreciated the chance to grow without the others around it?
In any case, its bigger now than it was.
Some of the plums are just about to flower Kirky, but some are weeks away but I will be promoting the beauty of the plum again this season, and that should make about 10 years in a row. Hahaha

The last couple of plums are rippers. Well played.

Anyone who reads the junk I write here would know by now that I appreciate and actively look for trees with some movement in the trunk because I like that. Well this one has heaps of movement and I would like to thank Mother Nature for the early training. It was growing along the ground, but I prefer it more upright like this.
This is a cotoneaster dug from a garden and it has a shari, dead "apex" and some very unusual movement. I couldn't get a lot of roots so I am crossing my fingers (and toes) that this will survive and prosper.
Could be one of the best digs ever!
