Air Layering a rough bark Japanese Maple

Post by Luke308 »

I bought 3 Acer Palmatum "arakawa" a few years ago. They were all grafted.....badly at that. I bought them with the intention of air layering at a later date.

Well today I was at the big green shed and got some sphagnum moss and thought I would give it a crack.

I took a few photos of the process to document and hopefully help others wanting to try air layering

Nice job, should work for you as i've got a couple of young Arakawas that are certainly not showing bark like yours that i've successfully layered from before and had great success. I did the same as you and stocked up on sphagnum from the big green shed and set a good sized layer on a Shishigashira garden tree i have.

I'm :fc: yours work, they certainly should do but until the roots appear it's always nerve wracking.

My neighbours must think I'm crazy. I've got 3 JM and about 12 air layers. They just see these strange black bags or aluminium foil on the trees.
