Where to find 'Shidava Gold' Japanese Maple (or similar)

Hi all,

I've seen this lovely japanese maple with vibrant yellow bark in this video by "Momiji-En Bonsai & Garden" on Youtube. The cultivar in the video (timestamped for your convenience) is 'Shidava Gold'... has anyone come across this cultivar (or a similarly yellow cultivar) in Australia?

My maples reference book says it was discovered as a witches broom from Aoyagi and then propagated and named by Raraflora nursery in NSW.

I've never seen it in Australia however, and their webpage for japanese maple varieties lists only 2, neither of which are Shidava Gold. It's also sometimes mis-spelled Shadiba Gold so look out for that one too.

It's not listed on Yamina Rare Plants list, and they are my go-to for rare japanese maple varieties.

Thanks TimS, yeah I couldnt find it on Yamina, or any other variety that seemed to have yellow bark (at least, couldnt identify easily).

Kirky, thanks for that. Ive sent Birch Grove Gardens a message on facebook now, as their webpage is under development. If they still stock it, perhaps they could send it to me bare-rooted next winter?

I've got one of those. It's a nice maple. Though I haven't noticed the bark being all that striking, I thought it got its name from the Autumn leaf color, which is a consistent yellow Goldy color. It seems more heat tolerant than regular J maple as well. Lends itself more to larger bonsai, I find.

If you have trouble finding one and really want one, let me know and I could do a graft for you, have to be next spring though.

Cheers
Paul.

Cheers Paul, that's very kind of you!
Ill keep this in mind for next year if I am unsuccessful. Birch Grove Gardens replied saying they actually got their stock from someone in Victoria. They recommended Nishiki, so that's the next step.

Nishiki is wholesale only, the'll just tell you to go to a retail nusery and put an order in (assuming they do have it).

I tried this with a variety in a pot size i knew Nishiki had and the nursery never got it in so :lost:

Maple springs nursery at Little Hartley NSW has a very wide range of maples, worth checking out, though their website is absolute rubbish.

If you want anything from Nishiki go via Bulleen Art and Garden. Talk to Claire she’s on the ball. Don’t bother with the others there.

I get most of mine from maples x mail. Not the type you are after but I have one called lemon chiffon which has yellow/green in spring, green leaves through the growing season then yellow/orange in autumn. Lovely colours.
