Millettia - Large Leaf

Post by Daluke »

Hi guys. I recently acquired a millettia japonica - it looks like a root cutting.

One side has the normal small leaf. The other, only overnight, has changed to a huge leaf.

Obviously I want to keep it small - I’m just wondering if anyone has seen this occur before? Is it a sport? Or just some freak occurrence that will revert back to small?

Interesting, never had that happen. Looks like a sport. Is it grafted? I have had grafts produce two different trees when the graft is done in a U one side takes the grated stock and the other the graft material. I think it happens when the joined unions move or incorrectly/poor graft. Wonder if the sport will flower?

Negative on the graft - they are all root cuttings which have leafed out.

I think that it is the other way round , the Millettia japonica ‘dwarf ‘form that you are propagating would of originally been a sport off a Millettia japonica and part of your cutting is reverting back .

Maybe leave it and grow it as a sacrifice , I presume it would grow quicker than the dwarf . The dwarf takes a long time to thicken up . It would be interesting to see what happens .

It happens from time to time. Just cut it off.
