I tried doing seedling cuttings when the idea was first published in Bonsai today magazine but results were no better than my usual root pruning so I've reverted to root prune at transplant.

All seedlings appear to be programmed to grow roots and I've rarely had seedlings react badly to root pruning. The earlier the better.

You'll note that I generally cut below some good lateral roots but that's not strictly necessary. Even seedlings with no lateral roots can be cut.
