Well done on consolidating the list Sue.

Chaenomeles missed that last list and is definitely easy.
I suspect that Quinces - Cydonia and possibly Chinese quince - Pseudocydonia should grow from roots as well. Was Pyrus on the list? I think I've had root cuttings grow once?

Other natives:
Santalum - sandalwood - difficult but I have propagated S. lanceolatum by root cuttings
Exocarpus cupressiformis - Cherry ballart

Melaleuca ericifolia? - swamp paperbark. Last year I stole what I thought were small seedlings on the road verge. They all turned out to be suckers from roots of larger trees nearby so I suspect would also be possible root cutting species.
Some acacias also produce suckers and would be worth trying - A. boormanii, A. dealbata are just 2 that I know sucker readily.

I've not got around to trying it but have seen many examples of Banksia integrifolia subspecies integrifolia suffering from severed roots in the wild, particularly on dunes.

Is the Natal Fig the only ficus species that is propagate-able by root cuttings?? Any others?
This is a good basic into to taking root cuttings for those not experienced.

So what are sandalwood like as bonsai,
:lost: I don't know Gavin. Probably pretty difficult as they are hemiparasites like mistletoe but tap into the roots of other trees rather than growing on the branches like most mistletoes. That means you'd need another tree in the pot as host for your santalum bonsai. Also very slow Plants still here are 5 years old and only 20cm tall and 4mm thick.

The cuttings were part of a recovery program in this area. Only 3 S lanceolatum left in Victoria although they sucker so each is actually made up of a cluster of plants which turned out to be genetically identical and do not appear to set seed very well. We tried cross pollinating but only got a few fruits and seed is difficult to germinate too.
I had fluked a few cuttings of Exocarpus (another hemiparasite tree) in the past and the same technique worked for Santalum so a couple of clones from one site were relocated to another to see if extra genes will help with seed production.

Well off the track of species that grow from root cuttings now though
