Re: Problems with site?
I will bear with you, not bare. It would be just too horrible to contemplate. Many thanks for your management.

Re: Problems with site?
Speak for yourself Gavin, I wouldn't mind getting bare with you Steven but maybe I will just wait for the site to be fixed & be happy with that

Re: Problems with site?
thanks Steven, I thought the 'bare' part was pretty funny.
I don't have any tech. knowledge, and know from some tech. mates things can get quite difficult.
Good luck. And thank you.

Re: Problems with site?
So I had problems with this too the last few days and decided to have a look into it. This would be a big part of the problem...
Reverse IP Lookup Results—3,459 domains hosted on IP address 27.124.120.41
Meaning Ausbonsai is sharing its IP address and therefore its server with 3459 other websites. That is beyond belief... No sensible, ethical or even sane service provider would dream of doing that. (the only one famous for pulling that rubbish is godaddy and why I will NEVER host with them again... even they only got to the high hundreds).
To compare here is a revers IP lookup of my site for which hosting costs me less than $4 a month from one of the large commercial companies. Nothing special, just basic cheap hosting.

There may well be ( and probably is), an IP address that this is the Internet facing NIC (or multiples of), for a network load balancer or server cluster.
There are many large environments that have 10's of thousands of Websites as virtual hosts on the same farm. Just because the are quite a few sites on the same address is not necessarily a telling argument. Yes if the cluster or farm is misconfigured,it might cause issues, but they would more likely be a "Hard error" and Quickly found.
This can be borne out by the ping times to the site. As they never vary from 75ms ( for me), regardless whether the site is have delays or not, indicates to the me the underlying network is not stressed, and the routing path to the individual host is not affected by other traffic.
IMHO i suspect that the one (or more) of the following is the root cause, but not being able to have shell access to the host we can only speculate
1/ Lack of Ram. ( my first suspect)
2/ insufficient disk space ( unlikely)
3/ unsufficient CPU resources
4/ a SQL server configuration issue that is limiting database connections
5/ a PHP Configuration issue that is limiting access
Ken

Re: Problems with site?
Thanks Ken for your explanation. I was obviously incorrect in my assumption that one ip meant one server. With my site that was the situation and as you mention it did menifest itself as a ping time issue.thanks for wising me up

Re: Problems with site?
Does anyone else struggle with what Ken just said ?
On the bright side I have found the site to be much better today - no lag for me atm.
I am just grateful to Steven for funding the site with his own coin and understand that sometimes poo happens. Keep up the good work Boss

I hereby put my hand up to donate to ausbonsai if it helps the long term benefit of the site.
This is by far the most superior bonsai forum on the net and as I have a vested interest in gaining as much information from it as possible I'm happy to put my hand in pocket if it helps.
Yes I have had issues with forum connectivity etc...but the biggest thing bonsai has taught me is patience...

Re: Problems with site?
Clearly we're dealing with a pro here! I've seen some "resource limit" errors, which makes me suspect #4 or 5 is at least Part of the problem. RAM could explain the overall slowness though. Been a few years since I've played with servers though.kcpoole wrote:IMHO i suspect that the one (or more) of the following is the root cause, but not being able to have shell access to the host we can only speculate

In my real job, I administer a network of about 75 servers ( windows), for 700 users, but also run quite a few linux boxes ( which AusBonsai runs on), so yep probably call me a pro
Hopefully Steven and the hoster can get it sorted.

Re: Problems with site?
Nice, Ken. In my old real job I did some light administration of Linux and UNIX servers plus a few Windows, but mostly I handled the databases. Lots of databases. I worked for a library software company, so you can imagine the size of those databases. I'm sure they'll get it sorted soon enough. Seems to be a little better the past few days.kcpoole wrote:lackhand wrote:Clearly we're dealing with a pro here! Its pretty good, but is anyone having issues with images not loading? Sometimes they just don't load then you have to refresh to get them.
