How to grow good bonsai stock like the Japanese nurseries

Just wondering if using the block/tile/cd/plate method on a larger trunk would work. You could make a large board with a hole in the size of the subject trunk. Cut the board in half then rejoin the board around the trunk and glue and screw it back together. Would this work or would the tree be to strong and split the board. Would it root out again or just kind of strangle the tree. I know you could airlayer but thinking if working on the nebri on a larger tree this could give you a better result of even roots. I have a tree at home that might be a good candidate for this if it's possible, trunk is nice but roots tend to be one side. I could root graft but thinking this might work better.

Boomy, Its a shame that tree died.... it was beginning to look like it would grow into a nice tree!

Tony, It looks like your pine is heading in a good direction! Is the wire still in the trunk? I imagine that once a bit thicker (a year or two's growth?) and the bumps from the wire should have grown out.
In the mean time i would let one or two branches grow as sacrifice branches while keeping the remaining growth tight and close to the trunk to build the future tree out of.

It looks like all the JBP seed i put in has struck so hopefully i will have 60 or so of these in a few years!

Hi Jow, definately heading in the right direction, yes the wire is still in and once it grows out and thickens, i think and hopefully it looks a little twisted and rolley polley. I dont think it will and hope it doesnt clean up and smooth out too much after it thickens. i would like it to get twisted rolls of muscle that are a little irregular as it grows. Yes theres a trunk going straight up for sacrafice and some low buds im now trying to entice to take off. It was slipped into this larger pot weeks ago and should power up now !!! Yeah i should have a 100 or so of these too in the future !!!

Ive planted 100 seeds and about to plant another 100 so after sacraficing and leveling i hope to have 100 killers left !!! 99 for me and 1 for you ps they will be plenty to go round!!!

Thats what this thread started out about, growing the best possible bonsai we can !!! Not just growing heaps of plants and pretending they are bonsai ??? So far there are a number of us on track here. Also quite a few we dont hear about.!!!

There will definitely be a market for these type of conifers In The future of Australian bonsai, and they should be able to be sold for good $$$. I know good juniper stock is sought after by many. At our recent club auction there was a good piece of juniper stock with an inch thicK trunk and the start of some live vain happening. It's foliage needed of of work to bring it back closer to the trunk but it sold for close to $100 and there was some fierce bidding going on! I'd imagine it would have sold for more if people had more money on them. So what I'm trying to say is people do want this quality of stock and if it is very good quality will pay good money for it. It's great to see this stock being grown for the future.

Well this is my attempt
I had this pine grown from a seedling. It was very leggy and I was going to throw it out as it was taking up bench space and didn't really see it going any where.

It cut a vein up either side right to the end of the each branch till it was to bushy to cut.

I know the trees refered to have been juni's so no idea how a pine will go but I was going to chuck it so figured it's worth a go.

This year I have put in 60 trident maples and 60 Japanese black pines. The tridents have already been wired up like the one below but the pines need some more time to grow before they will get a wiring. I should have a few good ones amongst them in a few years.
