Thank you for posting. Some very nice bonsai there. The ficus looks native? Do know its history please?

It is an effort to keep the red cut-leaf Japanese maple that fresh. I am not sure how its leaves would look in the summer

That giant fig was amazing but I liked the rosemary the best.. Did you buy anything??? Are you a member of the club??

The fig is over 40 years old, its actually 4 figs! they are Pt. Jackson (or so the owner thinks) They were found on the rubbish heap at the state nursery at Belair over 40 years ago. It took about 20 years b4 she realised that it was actually 4 trees. She has promised the tree to the National collection, but being Canberra has very low temps, this may not happen until they build an appropriate greenhouse, or so I am told. The tree(s) belong to one of the founding members of the club, and the pot alone weighs 17kg, which takes 5 buckets of soil.

Thank you for the info. I certainly think the National Collection is the best home for this tree. I have seen some big PJ figs. But this bonsai is best of its species I have seen so far.

My father keeps about 6 different types of figs. I have only one: Port Jackson This is my favourite fig species.

Hi Luke,

Ficus rubiginosa is a darling to keep. In Melbourne metro area, they slow down/stop during autumn and winter, they generally they grow fast compared to others.

Once you have a taste of them, it is hard to let go. We can train them in any sizes we want. The objective, I guess, is to workout what form/style for each tree, and concentrate on them, giving them constant TLC, and we will be greatly rewarded.

-- Ficus rubiginosa's greatest characteristic is they will shoot where we predict.
