Hi Jsmn

Looks like a big baby clinging to his security blanket.

If it were mine I would cut off the leader and look for a bushy spread of more even thickness branches like an umbrella look.

Great trunk hope you get more feedback --- got to look good no matter.

Cheers

Hi there, this is not a critique. Just MHO.

This tree has very nice shape. I like it. Overall, in my mind, the skeleton for a future bonsai has been set up. The leader should be thicken a little to be in proportion with the main trunk. Likewise branches should be developed in accordance, and foliage pads need to be defined.

I could not tell if it is a real rock or a cement block. The roots on the rock, if not developed much more substantially will keep this tree looks immature.

I would cover the rock completely using moss or coconut coir mulch to stimulate more roots over it. Also I would be mindful with cross roots on the rock.

Just my :2c:

Best regards.

I agree with Daiviet - the roots need thickening up. I would cut down a plastic pot and split it and palce it around the roots and rock. Just fill it up with a free draining mix and this will thicken the existing roots and encourage more. Remove every year and fix up crossing roots and re arrange and recover. I would let the top grow on to help the roots thicken up. :2c:
