I had a feeling it may be Acer Truncatum, however, the bark is what has made me uncertain. Like you I am not 100% certain. If it is Acer Truncatum the yes I will be happy indeed as like you pointed out I have been looking for one of these. I will however be making a few more inquiries before I would be happy to say this is solved. I may take it up to the local deciduous nursery which has many cultivars of both maple and liquidambar (including the "oakville highlight" liquidambar which it could possibly be if it is not Acer Truncatum). I will also email metromaples in the U.S as they deal primarily with Acer Truncatum, and I will email a friend of mine in Melbourne who is a botanist and works closely with maples.

Thanks for your thoughts nishiki3, I hope you are right, however the jury is still out.

I will keep you all updated

Looks like a Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) Break off a leaf and take a close look at the sap. If it is in any way milky, its definately a NM. If not have a look at Acer pseudoplatinus but I don't think so.

Keith Johansson from http://www.metromaples.com whom deals almost exclusively in Acer Truncatums' confirmed it is a "shantung maple" aka Acer Truncatum. I appreciate all those who helped in the ID especially Nishiki3. Thanks to all of you, I'm pretty happy with my find of a rare (albeit unhealthy) maple for $5 :hooray: :tu: :hooray:
