Post by Guy »

I'm off to Bali for a few days soon and may need to fill in a few hours----are there any balinese bonsaiists or nurseries of note-?-

Guy! I've been to the Bonsai Cafe a couple of times now and Ken's assumption is spot on!! :tu: Cheap Bintangs while perusing rows and rows of high quality material.
Pemphis in the hundreds as well as Casuarinas, Tamarind and a largish section devoted to Adeniums....alll in different stages of development.
All the guys on site (I found) to be very accommodating to any questions or queries you may have. Some speak better English than others, but on a whole, a great bunch of people.
Taking photos isn't a problem, however pay them the courtesy and ask first and you might find yourself closer to the action so to speak (on my last visit I sat for about two hours and watched some pretty fantastic carving/blowtorch work on a large Casuarina. On the subject of photos though, there are so many rows of trees that you'll find it really hard to get a clear shot without a cluttered background...of prime Pemphis
I'd imagine most of the Taxis know where it is, so getting there's no problem.

Cheers!

Yeah I'm looking forward to getting away and seeing some new stuff---btw anthony where are those avatar waves pumping ?--My body tells me I'm now too old for surfboards(except for the ten footers :o ) but anything could happen in those warm waters up north -providing I can still get out-----but :shake----photography might just be my limit this time

The Bonsai Cafe is right on Sanuar Beach and I do mean right on the beach. If you walk along the road which runs along the beach, can't think of its name, you will see it. Likewise if you walk along the beach it is right there. Have not been to Bali for many, many years now (long story) but the boys used to run a Water Sports Centre in conjunction with the Bonsai, so if you see someone parasailing follow them, they might lead you to the Bonsai.

Alan! As said it's right on the beach at Sanur. If you hop in a taxi (Blue Bird) give them this address and you'll find yourself there....have fun!!
"Jl Danau Tambligan 27 Sanur"
BTW Guy...that line-up is "somewhere" Up North in W.A.....and I'll tell you know it's no place for long-boards :shake: ....a very intense wave indeed!

Cheers!

Great place to visit i go every year (have a place literally 1km away...) the bonsai are at the back of the cafe and you can walk arround for as long as you want..they also sell a book witch will cost you a whole 15000 rupia (about $1.60 the way the aus dollar is) ask the guys who are working on the trees if you can get a copy as they dont have them lying around..(they are actuall working on a new book with the speed things travel in bali it maybe a while...lol) the book is full of great pics...have fun :tu:
