It isn't from Oz but yew gotta love it!

Post by Victrinia Ridgeway »

I got the initial styling done on my yew.... Well it's sort of an initial styling... I've been working on getting this tree going for three years now. I bought it from Elandan Gardens from someone who was selling tree material on consignment. I'm going to try and find the photos from when I first got it. I spent the next two and half seasons getting it healthy, and some structure started. Then I potted it this spring. I spent this weekend getting it all wired out, and the majority of the deadwood carved. I'm pretty pleased so far. It took 14 hours of work this weekend to get it to this point.

Enjoy....

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

P.S. You don't *have* to love it... but I hope you do. ;)

Hi Victrinia,

That is a very nice Yew, do you have any estimation of how old this one is...?
I have always liked these but it's really hard to find anyhing substantial like yours in Australia, do you have any tips on growing these by any chance, they're so slow to put on growth...?

By the way in Oz we do have a Podocarpus lawrencei (Mountain Plum Pine) which some members have been working with, it appears to be closely related to yours :)

I like it Vic but I don't love it ;) I wonder about the branches that have been bent alot. They seem to go againts the flow of the tree. Maybe it is only the red stuff that puts me off but I don't think so.
I thought this picture of a Trident that I have might intrest you.

I like the Yew and would allow the lower left hand side branches to become a bit more dominant in the future.

Nice result and techniques.

Hi V.
I very much like what you have done to the tree and my opinion is that I like the right hand side being the lower dominant side. This stops the feeling of the tree leaning to the side of the slant.
Well done and I think when it is planted on the correct angle in the pot, it will be a beauty
cheers

I agree with the idea of developing the left branch more strongly... that's the plan...

To give some perspective to where it came from... here's a shot from this spring after being put in a bonsai pot.... lo scary.

Soltan that's a nice trident... :) I like it very much! Believe me when I tell you the branches on my tree aren't as wild as they could be. I made the movement graceful but not exaggerated. Which meant undoing the efforts of my well meaning teacher. (Thats what I get for walking away for 2 mintues. ) It's not unusual to see branch structure like that in my area...

Your friend,

Victrinia

nice tree vic. i too agree, extending the lower branch on the left side. this will create dynamic movent. the right side is spot on where it is. what do you intend to do in that top area where it lacks a little taper? :D

What will I do? Teach you that old gnarly trees have no taper? :P
