I don't think you should chop it to the first branch ant, but repot it into a longer flatter pot, and earthy colour will do! I think it is an amazing tree and you would ruin it if you chop it back and air layer it! Love the tree I really want it!!!

MattA wrote:Your right about the pot not doing it any favors, when did you pot it up? It's a great pot & loads of potential in the tree but not together.

I am finding my one an interesting species compared to cunninghamiana, slower all round but so much nicer in the long run. I will be interested to see how you go with an airlayer & if you get any back budding once its reduced to the first branch.

Matt

It has now been in this PK pot for 2 yrs. In the right size pot and mix with the right conditions they power hard and fast. We are getting some brilliant results in the ground !!! They pop really well when chopped but not on the cut like litoralis generally an inch or two lower and all the way down to the foot. Two years ago i purchased 5 x 1 metre high trees that i chopped all down to 6 to 8 inch bare stumps. They all popped like crazy 4-6 weeks later and are in the ground beefing up at an astonishing rate. Craig and Beau thanks all the same however you guys can tell me that when im done. This has been a long time coming for this tree. In my eyes its sub standard! :palm: :tu:

Cheers mate, thats the sort of stuff I wanted to hear. I plan to put a heap of diff species in the ground real soon. I will be using tubestock but that wont make much diff to the rate they grow...

Excellent, a layer is the way to go. I am watching this thread to kick start my large one again. Might also be a layer job. Keep me updated. :tu:

That layer will be a ripper Antonio!
How recently did you do the layer...a day or two ago, or a few weeks back?
Cheers, Dario.

In the wild Mother Nature would have given it more of a shellacking than any nursery or bonsai grower :tounge:

Next time I head up the Wattagans I will get some pics of the torulosa's along the ridge, if only it wasn't National Park
