Flowering Quince.

Today i managed to get a little bit done around the garden. After starting the day on the wrong foot (i got up early to enroll in a course only to find out once arriving that enrollment was next week) I got a fair bit achieved.

I made up a Fertiliser cake mix and left it to stew, packed a tree that will be posted tomorrow and also potted and wired the below Quince.

I find that my taste in bonsai are forever changing. I used to be drawn to perfect formal uprights but the more i look at trees the more i am drawn to informal styles. I have become increasingly interested in clump styles and had been on the lookout for suitable material for a long time. Last year i found a candidate and bought it. I fed it and cut it back and it responded with a heap of new suckers. It was much larger vertically and was grown in a poly box which it had totally filled!

This particular quince has fire truck red flowers. That being said i doubt i will see them this year. I cut most of the buds off during pruning and knocked the rest off while i was wiring! Probably a good thing as it wont be wasting energy while getting over the re-pot.
Today it came out of the poly box and went straight into a Yamafusa signed pot and hence lost a lot of roots! I am thinking that the blue of the pot will compliment the red blooms well.
In a few years it should become a lot more ramified and dense as they really respond to feeding and pruning well.

Any one have any suggestions?

Oh and excuse my scrappy wiring. It was really difficult to anchor the wires and i took the pic before i had trimmed the ends....

my suggestion is that you don't need to do anything but feed it, water it & love it. this is going to look awesome as it ramifies up. look forward to seeing it in a year or 2 in the flesh. miyagiman.

looks good jow i really like it. ive always enjoyed seeing the really old japanese ones in bloom now you have made me want a quince clump to add to my shohin collection . haha i dont need more trees, that doesnt mean i wont get more.

Love quince clumps and this one is awesome! I've been on the hunt for one like this but haven't spotted any

It's funny the way folks treat similar specimens in such different ways: just today I spent a few hours hacking out all my suckers and attaching new roots on my one. Looking at yours, I kind of wish I had taken the route that you have.

I just saw the quince you were talking about in the Sunday thread. It looks like a really promising base! What colour flowers does it have? If you still wish you had kept the suckers i wouldnt worry too much, they grow like weeds with a little food!

When I bought the stump 2 years ago, I was assured that the flowers are red. Sadly, my care regime has not allowed me to see flowers yet... Maybe next year.

Sorry no idea about where to find one online, but just thought i would mention that even after cutting off all the flower buds it has produced half a handful of blooms as its leafed out. They should be opening this weekend. I will try to get a pic or two.

I Just snapped a pic this morning. Only one of the blooms has opened but, i counted 3 more that are yet to open. Not bad considering i cut them all off when i styled it
