Big Ficus Project #1

Post by matty-j »

Hey everyone

My work was cleaning out the very very neglected "nursery" behind one of the buildings and this fig has been sitting here for a very very long time!!
The root that had grown out of the bottom of the pot is 100mm thick and was growing directly on top of a septic tank, so it had to go!
my lucky day that no one wanted it! I asked around and everyone said "why would you want a fig for they get to big"
I washed away the old soil and potted it up with kens diatomite mix deep into its new grow box, i still need to clean up the saw cuts and seal them and remove the right hand trunk up high to better the taper.
The dimensions were measured at the very base after I removed the thick root growing out to the right, this is where I want the planting level to be one day, 40mm wide 1200mm high
lets hope it has enough energy to pull through :fc:

Hi Matt,
Score of the week I'd say mate. What sort of fig is it? Ideal time to be doing this work on figs, so it should be away in no time. Looks like there were a few roots anyway....

as far as i know theres no such thing as a macrocarpa, only a microcarpa.

looking through here, it looks similar to a ficus microcarpa,

Code: Select all

http://www.bonsaihunk.us/info/ChineseBanyan.html
Acer buergerianum, Acer palmatum, Bougainvillea (something), Ficus microcarpa, Lagerstroemia indica 'Fauriei', Melaleuca styphelioides, Olea Europa, Prunus (something) 'Dwarf Apricot', Quercus robur, Ulmus parvifolia, Zelkova serrata
