Hopefully everyone attending this year's convention will know Joann's pots are good quality and she won't end up with a whole lot of wet pots :palm:  also don't try this technique on her mame pots, if you inhale at the same time the consequences are not good  :o

Joann, I think your new customer signs might read: "You lick it, you bought it"
Cheers, Ryan

Interesting thread, don't the japanese use terracotta (low fired) for most production growing as it breathes & reduces risk of wet feet?

They do indeed Rookie (or used to, probably more plastic pots starting to be used now) but they are relatively larger pots. A bonsai pot has less volume and so needs to hold onto enough moisture to last the day. There must be a critical point where pot volume changes from needing to dry out to needing to conserve water.
I find rock slabs and Root over rock plantings need more water because the stone wicks water out of the potting mix and evaporates it to the atmosphere.

Thanks heaps Joann!! Now that I have a... taste :palm: ... for what to look for in a good pot, I think I'll now be paying a bit more attention!
