Wauchope Bonsai - monthly meeting

The Wauchope bonsai group's next meeting is on Saturday 10 August commencing at 10 am and going until around 2 pm. The group meets in the Rotary Hall, Oxley Lane, Wauchope.

This month's meeting will feature a display of root over rock / growing on rock.

The meeting will commence with a discussion of the display trees, followed by a presentation on the tops of tree. The top of the tree defines the tree, and developing and maintaining the top is a key bonsai skill. The remainder of the meeting is workshop time for members to work on their own trees and a separate a 1 hour session for beginners to learn the basics of bonsai care and creation.

Visitors are welcome to our meetings. The group is an excellent way to learn how to create your own bonsai, or to care for the one(s) you already have.

The Wauchope bonsai group's next meeting is on Saturday 14 September commencing at 10 am and going until around 2 pm. The group meets in the Rotary Hall, Oxley Lane, Wauchope.

This month's meeting will feature a presentation regarding the preparation of trees for showing and their display at the show. This is because our annual show is on soon, on the third weekend of October at Port Panthers. Pictures from last year's show are below.

The meeting will commence with a discussion of the display trees, followed by the presentation, then workshop time for members to work on their own trees. In tandem with the workshop period is a 1 hour session for beginners to learn the basics of bonsai care and creation. There will also be lots of discussion of the trees liberated from the cow paddock at this month’s dig. Collected trees are an excellent way to get an advanced bonsai quickly.

Visitors are welcome to our meetings. The group is an excellent way to learn how to create your own bonsai, or to care for the one(s) you already have.

Jobs to do this month are:
• The best time for repotting deciduous trees is past, especially if they are already leafing up.
• As trees start to grow, nip the new growth back to one or two pairs of buds. This will keep the tree compact.
• Start fertilising your trees now. Soluble fertilisers should be used regularly (fortnightly). Slow release fertiliser can also be used.
• Clean moss off the trunks of your trees and keep weeding.

This is one of the plants on today's display bench. We also had maples, celtis, satsuki azalea and bougainvillea on display. Today's presentation was about displaying bonsai, in readiness for next weekend's show.

The November 2016 meeting's presentation is about carving. The display tree theme are privets. THe fun starts at 10am.

The theme for the day is Bonsai Basics, with a presentation in the morning and a 2 hour workshop in the afternoon.

The display trees will be figs.

This month's meeting will feature a display of native trees and a presentation on grafting and layering. Neil Padbury, from Shibui bonsai nursery at Yakandandah, will be the presenter. Neil will lead a workshop in the afternoon.

The display trees will be shohin sized trees.

Kenshitsubo – These are the smallest possible variety of bonsai tree. Little more than artfully-designed seedlings, they’re also known as poppy seed sized trees. Rarely are they ever more than one to three inches in height. They can be lifted with two fingers easily.

Shito – These are the smallest common size of bonsai tree. Known as fingertip size, they grow generally between two and four inches in height. Often they can be found in pots no larger than a thimble, leading to their other name, the thimble bonsai.

Shohin – These bonsai trees are in a category that overlaps others, leading to the disuse of the name. They grow between two and six inches in height. They’re also known as the palm bonsai, because of how they easily fit in a palm. Shohin and Shito are differentiated from other small bonsai trees by the techniques used to create them.

Mame – These bonsai trees grow between four and eight inches in height. They are the smallest of the bonsai trees known as one handed trees, because it takes a single hand to move them. Often they have larger pots than Shohin bonsai trees.

Komono – Also known as the generic small bonsai tree, the Komono bonsai grows on average between six and ten inches. They are almost the largest tree that can be moved with one hand.

This month's meeting is a pot making workshop led by Newcastle potter Penny Davis. The workshop runs from 9am to noon.
The display will be trees planted in hand made or usual pots.
