Grevillea Obtusifolia Cascade

A local native to my area, I've had this Grevillea Obtusifolia for about 2 and a half years now.

I've just observed it and taken note of how to keep it healthy up untill a couple of nights ago. At our recent local club meeting I have given it's first prune and wiring in the direction of a cascade, as that's how this species is inclined to grow so i want to take advantage of that.

We, at the club are unsure of how it will respond to pruning and wiring as none of us have much experience with Grevilleas in general, but it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I'll update for anyone who is also interested.

Thanks for posting. Personally I love grevillea flowers, I find them very unique.

My father has a grevillea hedge at his house which I always dream about digging up and converting to bonsai. Very interested to see how this goes.

I was also going to recommend Ruth's posts about grevillea She probably has more experience with the genus than anyone.

Thanks Postmet, I’m keen to get future updates. I think Grevilleas suit cascade styles quite well.

We had a Grevillea olivacea hedge growing in our garden that I was able to take an air layer from quite easily. I’ll make a seperate post when I get some photos but I’ve been wiring without problems, but once the main branches are in place clip and grow works well with lots of back budding on young wood.

Thanks everyone for your interest, hopefully we can learn some more about Grevillea’s and have some success with them. I believe they have the potential to be a very unique flowering bonsai on the world stage.

I also have a Grevillea Rosmarinifolia (Scarlet Sprite) my Grandad gave me a couple of years ago, that I also haven’t done anything to yet. It was in a small bonsai pot until today, I have repotted it to grow some more in spring to start working with. I saw Ruth’s Scarlet Sprite in her thread they look quite effective with their small needle-like leaves.

[UPDATE]

Unfortunately the Obtusifolia has since passed away. May it rest in peace. It responded well to the wiring and pruning so i at least can say that had nothing to do with it's demise. I believe it to have been Phytophtora dieback after the wet conditions, and other proteacea family trees do the same thing at the same time in my garden. Anyway i plan on getting another one to have a crack with again.

On the other had the Rosmarinifolia Scarlet Sprite has put on good growth since the last post. I gave it a good pruning, and now is in the process of another flush of growth. It's looking strong and healthy at this stage so i'm happy with that.
