Haha true! She has a jade which she occasionally takes care of. Fortunately the jade doesn't care if it's getting taken care of. She's been known to bare-root it at random if I'm doing root work on one of my trees.

Quite small! So far I've gotten away with it by telling my wife that the bonsai collection is only expanding because I'm uppotting things but I don't think she'll buy that for much longer
I think most of what I've dug, if it survives, will be up for grabs at some point.

Re: 2021 digs - greg27
I just spend a good Sunday taking 1/2 of my collected stock to my parents house. It’s crazy how much trees you have when it lay it out flat and not stack them on top of each other

My house has a rear extension with a fairly flat roof, maybe a 5 degree slope - I'm casually-not-seriously-but-seriously thinking about what it would take to turn it into a roof-top garden. I think I've entered a new level of crazy.

2021 digs - greg27
I’ve actually contemplated taking stock up onto my roof as well so it has better access to sunlight in the mornings (upper level extension). My only concern is when I water it during winter, the mess it might make.greg27 wrote:My house has a rear extension with a fairly flat roof, maybe a 5 degree slope - I'm casually-not-seriously-but-seriously thinking about what it would take to turn it into a roof-top garden. But the main reason for taking stock to the parents is they have a massive vacant area of the garden where I’m going to grow my seedling and trees in the ground - I’m impatient with the progress I’ve seen so far from the pots and trays they are in

all this talk of bonsai on the roof, I had to share a few pics of Hanh's set up when he featured on Bjorn's vlog.

Imagine taking out dug olives on the roof, lol.
Those images shows that it isn’t a silly idea after all.

I potted up the last two ash (and repotted one out of the dodgy cut-off pot) after a generous donation from a neighbour.
I wonder how long it'll take me to fill these...You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: 2021 digs - greg27
I wonder if it would be better to remove those straight sections now to a lower bud? I guess it depends on how big you want them but those sections don't match the rest of the trunk lines. Ash have opposite leaves, so there will be a bud on both sides of those straight bits. Each pair of buds is also 90 degrees offset from the one before

Yes done, I've reduced these by about a third. I cut them a bit high when digging and then tend to forget to do anything about the straight sections when I get them home

All the radiatas have new buds appearing, a good sign I assume!

Back on the hawthorns - this is one that was dug back in mid-June. It's the frontrunner in terms of growth but all the others that were collected on that day seem to have survived (so far).
