Autumn 2015

G'day,

I'n the front of my garden there are 3 Crepe Myrtles, purchased at the same time from the same place and planted at the same time in the same way.
You can see from the following pictures that the ball on the left is showing beautiful Autumn colour and the other is still growing powerfully

Anyone know why?

Even though they are in the same general area there could be(would be) some soil variables and that could account for some differences. The biggest influence however will be the aspect - amount of sun, reflected heat from the buildings, what is on the other side of the two walls and what is on the other side of the walls which will (could) influence the amount of heat that is transferred. All that said, its a very pleasing and relaxing scene that should be enjoyed.

Here are a few more pictures as autumn colour this year progresses a little further.

The rain and wind over the last couple of days has knocked a fair few leaves off this English elm but you get the idea English elm medium 2015 5 .JPG

This one is not yet bonsai but does have some potential. It is A. palmatum 'Hanama Nishiki' which is a dwarf Japanese maple. lovley trees there as usual you have Shibui, just wondering as i also have a Hanama Nishiki.

Is it worth while to try air layer these? or take cuttings?

or should i just graft them? but grafting is my least favourite to try as the graft is usally visable.

I have plenty of branches to try so thought i give it a go this spring...they have super small leaves and a bonsai with this species would look soo unique..

do you have any experience with this species?

I cannot help with propagating Hanama Nishiki. Some varieties of JM root better than others but I have only ever grafted this one so have no idea if it will root easily or not.
I have real problems growing any JM from cuttings so I don't even bother to try any more. Other people seem to be able to do it so it is worth a try to see if you can root this variety.
There's a layer on one of my trees but no roots last season so just waiting to see if any develop this spring.
