Bonsai Reshaped 2024 - National Arboretum Canberra

Post by NBPCA »

Hi Everyone

11 - 14 April 2024

Join us for our annual celebration of the art of bonsai at Bonsai Reshaped 2024!

Delve into this year's theme of 'Big & Small' through our exciting series of events. Whether you're an established bonsai artist, or just starting out, there will be no shortage of inspiration, new skills and tips to learn through workshops and the exciting Bonsai After Dark experience.

This year we welcome internationally recognised artists Marija Hajdic from Croatia and Morten Albek from Denmark, to share their expertise, influences, experiences and enthusiasm through workshops and live demonstrations. Both professional artists carry the legacy of the bonsai masters into the future whilst developing and exploring the boundaries of the artform.

Bonsai Reshaped offers the opportunity to connect with these international artists through their engaging live demonstrations and workshops.

Hi Everyone

Just checking in to see if there is any confusion about this event. I was talking with someone in the community and they said that they were unable to commit to 4 days to attend the event. I just wanted to see if this was a common perception?

Yes, there are 4 days of events, but they are all individual events and can be attended individually. There is no need to attend the full 4 days, unless of course you wanted to.

A great way to get involved if you are coming from interstate is to come for the Friday evening function, then catch a workshop the following morning before heading home.

Cheers

I had fun at the evening shindig few years back, and the workshop ... one of the highlights though, which never gets enough credit is Sam's Auction's, entertaining, suspenseful, floats like a rollarcoaster, wallet stung by a bargain !!!

Will try and get there this year, if the stars align.

I’ve questioned whether to write this at all but I feel it best said.
I want to be totally honest. I spent a lot of money to go to last years event. I would rate it ok at best. I felt the night was only part organised and the leigh and Sam spent most of the night trying to fill in the blanks. I don’t imagine the blame totally falls to them though
Sorry I’ve been burnt once and won’t be back.
No offence

Hi Squizzy

I am really sorry you felt this way about our last event. I hope that our future events will run smoother than that one did.
Unfortunately, in the world of bonsai demonstrations things do not always go to plan. I certainly did not expect one of our demonstrators to cut off the part of the tree that would have made for very interesting viewing over a longer period, and I did not expect the other demonstrator to accidentally break a main part of the tree through no fault of his own.

As the MC, I take full responsibility for having to think on my feet and fill in the time with a few other activities. I was glad to hear that some of our audience thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu juniper styling race between the two demonstrators.

We have a great night of proceedings planned with our next two artists and I hope that everything goes to plan. If it doesn't, through experience, I will have an entertaining back up plan.

Cheers
Leigh

Hi Leigh

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Something to keep in mind in the future. While it is t my life savings I spent for some it might be a once in a life time thing. They may fly to canberra, pay accommodation, pay for food and for travel, pay for the event ticket.
I think starting with better stock could have helped. I must admit when I seen what Nik was offered he probably thought “ what is this Shari “. Not much could have been done with that in my opinion.
Hoping your next event runs smoothly and is entertaining.

Cheers

Hey Squizz - are you talking about the cascading JRP that's shown in the attached thread? If so, I thought it had some great potential?

Hi KCR.

Yes that’s it. To me it seemed to have long internodes with a thin trunk base. Maybe it’s great material for a demo as the artist could show what is possible from such material.
The result was pretty unimpressive though even with a snapped branch. To me it looked like something from a beginner’s class not a national event. Maybe I was expecting too much????

It’s only my opinion though and as the saying goes, we all have one.

Cheers.

sounds like the 'dangers of a demo' for the crowd (and for the tree)- trying to bend something in a couple of hours that probably should take two seasons

Oh, just a heads up.

The workshops can be booked right up until the time of start, however we need numbers for the caterers on the Friday night, so we will take bookings up until close of business Monday 8 April. Don't leave it too late.

Cheers & see you there.
