twisted shimpaku

hey people.

this one has recieved its first styling, although i dont have any before shots it wasnt really much to see anyways, just a basic shimpaku shrub in a 6 inch pot

using some graft tape as a protective wrap as to not rip the cambium off the tree i wired with a 4mm wire to get some strength and then 2.5mm wire all the way up the trunk aswell to help hold position and do a couple of the branches.

from here it will receive a constant regime of pinching and feeding for it to fill out, then once the wire comes off i will start shari work, starting with a small 3-5mm shari running the length of the trunk on two sides possible, then every year i will cut a couple of mm off the shari to widen it, this will eventually become a thick live vein and be quite a feature with the dead wood aswell
the foliage is a bit messy right now while it is growing out, eventually the pads and canopy will be nice and neat, maybe even a full canopy. trees change just like our visions
let me know what ya think and if i should go anywhere with it

Looks great mate!

I like the second photo for the front though

more structure in the branches visible, and in that position
the apex bows towards the viewer which is generally seen as a good thing. ( is it not?)

thats the beauty of bonsai the front can be the back and vice versa, this tree is bound to go through many changes along its lifetime, so it will mostlikely see different fronts and rears and veiwing angles, i do see your point though and yes generally speaking the apex is supposed to lean towards the front slightly, which it does but it does that from both angles, i think it seems more so from the second picture as the main flowing curve is going out then in from the veiw

once the sharri goes onto this tree and it starts popping out you will be amazed at the twisting and turning it does

and i knew it was gonna make ya pop ya head up and have a look, you should see what i have done with some of the others... they just look like big masses of foliage
i am still trying to figure out how i am gonna get the wire off one of them, i dont know if they are worth showing as of yet, they are just a complete mass of green lol, i didnt remove any foliage of it and i mean no foliage at all

like i said its an absolute mess but for now it shouldnt be a problem this will set in then it will be twisted and bent even further
if i can get in a change the wiring and such forth

cheers mate, this is probly the most messy of the lot, the others still look like a mess but you can see a bit of trunk movement but i have a gut feeling ths one will come out well with great dead wood and twisting

lmao @ the mangled one, its a mess at the moment, but i didnt see the point of clearing the foliage out when i want strong growth either

It's a mess now, but it won't be one day ^_^
I'll take a pic of my tiny little Monterey pine that I twisted up.
It doesn't have much in the way of foliage, but it will hopefully be nice one day =P
Can't wait to get onto twisting up a few of these thigns!

look forward to seeing the radiata (monetery) mate it will get strong, especially if it is still young they dont always have heaps of foliage

little bit of an update, i have tweaked a little hear and there, i am not overly happy with the pom pom look of the foliage, this will hopefully grow out and i can wire secondaries into pads, this will take a bit, lucky its a few year project

i am actually liking the side veiw of it now for a preferred front, i am starting to get the feeling this tree will be veiwable from 360 degrees once it fills out and starts getting deadwood etc.

G,day Jamie, I estimate this tree to be about 20 25 cms with a trunk diameter of 2.5 cms. If I am right it has a lot of growing to do.
Fortunately you are a very young man.

There are a number of things that disturb my eye, the first side view has the two branches that are the only ones in a straight line as in a ladder.
Then the apex . All the foliage is concentrated on the ends of the branches!.
I feel as I said it has a long way to go.
Another thing mate if you ever decide to move, you are going to have an awful lot of trees to take or sell
