I have two walnuts in the literati comp and they will need to be planted into appropriate pots by the end of the comp. I joined the competition to “learn by doing” and find that pots are an area I need to learn more about.
From what I’ve seen in books, posts etc, literati are usually displayed in small, often round pots or bowls; I’ve had my eye out for suitable pots but haven’t seen anything that just seems right as yet.
Please ignore the “hardware” which will come off in spring (hopefully the bends will remain). These two walnuts have substantial bases with hollows and, while I want to keep within the traditional guidelines with these trees, I have been considering a pot a little deeper than usual to balance these bases.
Your thoughts on options would be appreciated,

jan this is a tough one 
i would look at something rather simple without any detail work, maybe rivets but dont think so, i have found unglazed pots go well with things that are hard to get a pot for. i would look for a dark unglazed pot, red brown to dark brown i think mate.

Jan, pot choice is such a personal thing....as you have a picture in your head of your "finished" bonsai, you must also be the "desgner" of the pot, i.e., frame! Consequently, I think you need to keep looking for that perfect pot.
There are a few guides to the aesthetics of pot choice which I'm sure you know but keep in mind the 'ball park' rules. The tree should be taller than the width of the pot (in the case of literati, much taller!); the depth of the pot should match the diameter of the trunk above the basal flair...again,I'm not sure that this is necessarily adhered to with literati??
Literati are generally shown in round pots, generally glaze free and somewhat primitive in style.
We're almost neighbours Jan, so if you'd like to drop in for a cuppa and a natter about the finer points of pots, please do! I'm on the western side of the Snowy's at Adelong, whereas I imagine you are somewhere on the eastern side!
