[SOLD] What would you pay for this Buxus

I recently sold a number of landscape trees and while the buyer was here he asked about this Buxus. As I have mentioned in a few other posts I am slowly culling out my non native stocks to refocus.

Seeing as I dont frequent bonsai nurseries, I am wondering what others would be prepared to pay or what they would expect to pay for similar stock? The trunk is approx 150mm across at the narrowest point on the trunk, as bonsai it would need alot of carving etc to make it into something but he is wanting to turn it into topiary so .....

hi Matt,

i will be getting a fair few buxus in the next couple of weeks that will be coming up for sale, one is this size, now even though it hasnt been trained for bonsai a trunk like that you dont get cheaply at a nursery, if you can even find them that size, my buxus harlandii i bought a while back was 160 and is only half the thickness across as that, just cause the bloke that wants it wants to do topiary with it doesnt matter either, you got it in the mind set of bonsai, or potential bonsai and that is what you are selling it as. (or should be)

now the ones i am getting of that size i will be asking $200 ono as they just dont come that size unless ground grown for years and years, remember buxus are a semi slow plant to work with.

hope it helps a little i know its a hard thing to put a price on a tree.

Thanks Jamie, that helps heaps... This was part of a garden hedge and according to the owner of the home was planted sometime towards the end of the 70's making this atleast 30yrs old. I had a few ideas of what i could do with it.. box have never appealed to me in any form, bonsai, topiary or hedge. When the chance to dig something comes up tho I rarely if ever say no, not just for bonsai but also for landscape work.

If it is not worth any thing to you! it is to him a gesture, might be in order for future reference when he has something that you want. It has worked for me when I have had something as I say, has stopped talking to me. I have given it to some one who desired it.
That gesture has been repaid time and again in kind, and direction of where some thing of desire is.

Just a thought.
As to how much it is worth, if you wish to sell it, how much effort have you put into collecting and keeping it thriving.

Hey Pup,

I have done similar things in the past with items and you are so right it does come back in kind, often not from the same person but thats the karmic wheel isnt it. I am hesitant with this individual as something doesnt sit right.

As to how much effort... not much. It took under 10 mins to get out of the ground & wrapped, probably 20mins to clean out the roots & repot, add a 40km round trip. How much care to keep it thriving... none It was simply potted & watered with a bit of seasol, has been fed with the rest of my trees & watered likewise. One tree is not much extra when you have a heap (as you would know well). So if I was charging on a time basis like I do my landscaping work its worth $60 for the 2hrs work and $10 in petrol.

Would I let it go for $70... not on your life, as Jamie said .. IF you can find a trunk that size in a nursery your up for a fair bit. Then again, I would happily trade it for a nice piece of native material to replace it, which is what i will do with the proceeds, buy more native stocks. Want to swap for one of your beautiful melaleuca's???
