Cultural revolution pots, do you have any??

Post by Jamie »

hi guys :D

after talking to dumper recently he pointed out that i have a cultural revolution pot, i didnt know what the hell he was talking about until he explained it to me that it was a pot that was made during the cultural revolution over in china, there is a little bit on it by lindsay farr in world of bonsai series.

i dont know a great deal about it so started reading a bit, here is a bit on the actual revolution on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Revolution

anyways, i was wondering if others had some of these pots? here is mine :D

Crpotchop.jpg
the pot looks dirty but that is actually the glaze, it is a matt like glaze with some discrepencies in the glaze which is the "dirt marks" it just adds more character to the pot though i reckon :D
i dont know what the writing on the sides of the pot means, if someone could translate that would be awesome :D also if the chop mark could be ID'd that would be greatly appreciated :D

Very beautiful pot jamie. Where did you buy it from?
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

i know they dont manufacture the culture revolution pots any more so they are rather scarce these days, i know lindsay farr has some, and dumper has the same pot as me :D

That is a great pot Jamie and with some history even better. I think I remember Lindsay talking about that era. I have envied his scouring the markets where this stuff is sold. I think some of the potters are making some very great stuff these days as well but I would love a few of these Antique pots at least
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

to right brett,

there are some very nicely made pots these days, they just dont have the character of the antique ones, whether it can be called antique im not sure? but the sort of charaterisation of these pots only come with one thing, time! :D

since dumper told me about them i am now looking in second hand shops and the likes as there are some really really nice pieces with great artwork on them and usually the second hand shops dont know what they are or what they are worth!

I have a large cascade pot that on one panel shows the soldiers of the red army and the flag on a hill.

I have a pot that I bought at a garage sale that has some Chinese characters stamped on the bottom of it, the pot doesn't appear to be anything special though, just the usual run of the mill mass marketed item, I should get it checked out, maybe I'm working when I don't really have to

Dumper, that's a damn fine celadon right there, nice lines, beautiful crackle, and not too luridly green or blue - very refined indeed. Could you post a photo when you put a tree in it? Celadons are not easy to balance with a tree, because of the competing greens.

Turns out i had two pots from this era. Cascade pot is 50cm tall and a dark Khaki green glaze.

I think koreschoffs imported them in the 60s or 70s.
