Hi Craig, just looking at it now and can definately see what your saying, alot of branches could be positioned better. mainly always trimmed back to a bud in the direction i was looking for, but now that the canopy is filling out a bit, i should put in a little more effort..I appreciate your pointing that out,your advice always welcome, cheers mate Craig

Hi all, i spent some time today defoliating my Elm, tidied up the tree a bit and wired alot of branches ,looks alot better the pic's not that great sorry now to wait for more leaves,,,, Craig

weird, does it do the same as a maple?like when you defoliate a maple its like giving it 2 seasons in one.

I've been a bit slack getting on here recently... and hadn't seen this thread before.
I saw the pic as your avatar and thought it was just a really nice google image from somewhere in the world...so congratulations on making a very great tree worthy to be called a BONSAI.
I really love your carving work, reminds me of a gum that has been burnt out and refuses to give up.

Hi Scott, thanks mate for the compliments,It's starting to take shape pretty nicely but still has some way to go yet.The carving still needs attention but is turning out better than i thought it would, i think i'm achieving what i set out to do.

Pat ,yes defoliation is like giving it 2 gowing spurts in 1 season, Elms can be defoliated no problems, this is the first real defoliation of this tree during a growing season, and was mainly done to wire the branches, Thanks guys Craig

looking the good champ, I keep looking at this one and am drawn to the dead wood on the right where it is right through, im not sure anything could be done if you wanted too, grafting a few whips in would fill it though, just a little distracting to me, overall good work though

Hi Jamie, i know exactly what you are saying, the hole was an accident, there was a knot and when i carved it ,i sorta busted right thru,.i thought the tree was buggered but it survived.I have some ideas on improving that area of trunk so ,we'll see what happens in the future

Hi all, i've just noticed that when i started this topic i stated that i cut this tree down in 1993,,Actually i wasn't doing bonsai in 93, sothats incorrect information..In actual fact the tree was cut down in about 2002/2003, so has only been trained for the past 7years not 16yrs like i originally said..Sorry about posting the wrong info, Craig

You are forgiven I like this tree a lot but, like Jamie, keep getting drawn to the base and the piece missing.You should be able to fill it, there are many ways to do it. Wood filler and colouring, maybe grow a second trunk and turn it into Mother and child. Lots of solutions

Thanks Bodhi, are you drawn to it because Jamie pointed it out?maybe. Basically i have a cutting from this same tree that i will use to address the issue but plan to leave the hole and complete the trunkline down to the roots again, something like this maybe,,, cheers mate Craig
