Hi Everyone,
I have a question. Whenever I talk to people about when I should dig a pine or any other tree for that matter, they always say "late September or early October" or something like that. I am always given a month, but never anything else. I have spotted a pine that I want to dig, and my question is how do I know what the right time of year is? Is it purely weather based, or do I look at candle progress on the tree and dig according to that? I have JBPs in pots and their candles are starting to grow, but are nowhere near breaking out in needle. The tree I want to dig is a different variety of pine, and its needles are growing out already.
Any advice?
Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Pine Yamadori
If this tree is wild it is likely a radiata. I have dug these at all times of the year, even in summer (with care) and they survive. They are pretty tough. It probably doesn't matter what stage of growth it is in but don't dig when the weather is hot or dry.
Edit - sorry, I didn't realise you are not in Australia. You may need to find out what sort of pine it is in case it is not as hardy as a radiata.
Cheers,
Rowan

All difficult things have their origin in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small.
