Amazing tree of the utmost quality.
Wow.
Wow.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Next step will be to sculpt the tree a bit more.
After the full candle prune and hard needle pluck I will lightly compact each pad and try and leave a bit more space.

Growing form seed
indeed
Have you decandled this pine yet?
I have read and seen from different sources that to get more back budding further along the branch, you don't decandle.
Is there any truth to this?
Does it depend where you want the back budding to occur?

Decandling is to get the new needles as short as possible. This pine does not need any major back budding to improve it.
Decandling the strongest candles (95% of the entire tree)will help buds that have already emerged but are struggling and does seem to activate some back budding as well.
I think both techniques would help.

Re: Japanese Black Pine from seed after 21 years
Update,
Repotted this tree yesterday into a new Tokoname pot I brought back from Japan a couple of weeks ago.
I love grey unglazed pots and was very happy to see this dark grey pot on the shelves of the kiln (Yamaaki) that was closing down; no more pots will be coming from that kiln unfortunately.
The pot is slightly bigger than the previous pot and now does not seem as cramped as it was in the old one after a few years.
I will pluck off the long needles evident in May/June; once the tree is settled in; ready for the winter show season.

Beautiful tree Grant!
Was in canberra today and its still quite hot down there (as with the gong), wondering if you always repot this time of year and when this one was candle cut?
Cheers,
Kerrin

From experience of now 8 years in Canberra I now repot all my conifers in early autumn; as soon as the hot days have mostly passed( nothing over 30 degrees in the next week).
I have found some problems repotting in spring down here due to the long, cold spring period.
I candle pruned this tree around the 15th of November. It has been a cool summer here this year and the pines I decandled around 20th December have still not finished elongating and hardening off.

Re: Japanese Black Pine from seed after 21 years
I know what you mean, none of my pines have hardened off fully yet, that being said I have a little more time up my sleeve than you so not to worry, but I did think it was a tad slow. Looking forward to getting the pine I worked on with you @ BBTH last year into a pot this year, it's come along really well.
Cheers for sharing your wisdom

Can't make Bonsai By The Harbour this year as I have a commitment in Brisbane this year. A very busy year this year (and next year as well )
Look forward to seeing pics at some time.

Update.
And doing fine. Back in its usual spot which is sunny and slightly protected from wind as it is close-ish to a wall.

Re: Japanese Black Pine from seed after 21 years
So you re-potted in early march? Is that when you repot all of your JBPs? Would you suggest it is too late to do so now?
From what I understood and have read JBPs should be repotted late winter early spring?
Id be interested in your thoughts
