Hi,
Today I visited my parents at Sanctuary Point and while there took a visit to Bonsai at the Bay, just out of Huskinson. Mason and his wife were most friendly and he had some very well developed bonsai. I loved some of his Black Pine. If you are in the area it is worth a visit, even if only to appreciate the efforts of another keen bonsai fanatic. They even offered us a cuppa.

Hi all

I have been rebuilding the nursery over the last 2 months. New timber benches mainly made out of red gum slabs. I had to unfortunately take out too very tall trees to make new bench area safe. Here are a few pictures of the rebuild may give you some ideas for benches. The benches are almost complete..... fingers crossed with the weather.

If any one has any good ideas for shading set ups for the nursery any ideas would be appreciated.

nice work Mase I'd love to use redwood, just can't justify the expense as I don't have a cheap source. Treated pine sleepers doing the job for now

Does redwood warp and twist like pine eventually does?

Very nice Mason, it looks like I'm up for another trip down the mountain, to see how the coastal folk do bonsai.

P.s. I think a timber slat screen overhead would look nice in your display for shade.

Hi Mase,
As it is for a growing nursery, functionality is more important than aesthetics, the best shade structures I have seen are a framework of 20mm gal steel tubing with tensioned white 50% shadecloth stretchesd over it.

We droped in yesterday and slowed up the last stage of fixing these new bench tops. I was very impressed with and envious of these new benches they look great so well done Mason and it was great to finally meet and chat to you. I'll be interested to see what sort of shade arrangement you end up with - let us know what you find out about the retractable sails that the pub has used please.

Thanks all for the shade ideas, great ideas I will really take my time to get it right, I will let you know if I go with the retractable model could be very cool. The gal idea sounds great as well. Thanks again Mase.

Also in regards to the redwood warping, potentially yes it will warp, but I have braced it underside to hopefully counteract the warping, also 5 coats of oil may help and a top up 6 monthly may keep them straight. Fingers crossed

Called into Bonsai at the Bay yesterday was quite impressed with the range of stock that Mason has collected and he was very friendly and made us a cuppa, did not buy much as funds are low at the moment but will be back with a bucket full of money to buy some quality trees.
Would recommend to anyone.

Aw Shucks thanks for the thumbs up, it was lovely to meet you both after your epic drive from Canberra and avoiding the landslide on the Kings Hway. Nice choice with the crabapple and Japanese black pine, should be fun working on it at the school of bonsai with Ray.

I am very pumped, the benches have finally been finished at the nursery, stock is starting to hit the decks again, feels like home again after the massive renovations. Thought you may like a peeky boo at the benches. (night vision) All paths through the bonsai area formalised now. Only one job left the shade cloth.....

What a great job you have done with the redo, I really like the red gum slabs.

With regards warping, was the timber dry when you installed it or still a bit green? The reason I ask is my old kitchen was built from similar slabs, the sections the previous owner installed had been done while it was still green & they warped like a bugger, the sections I completed with dry wood didnt move an inch

Look forward to seeing some pics of it in daylight.

Really love the nursery, can't wait to go there!!! Just wanted to know, I'm assuming your still open and operational? If so do you have any white pines and red pines! Definately loved the elms, maples, oaks will be buying my self one of each when I see you!!

Also do you have much native stock?

Sorry for all the questions, it's just I will have to travel from Queensland and you look like the type of person who would have some great native stock! I will be down anyway even if you don't
