So glad I found and read through this thread cause I have a 3m tall Callistemon viminalis that I wish to strike and the information in here has been most helpful and inspiring.

But I have a question, is it more effective to take cuttings or try air layering. What would be the max diameter for cuttings? I have my eye on a branch of oldish wood that has a flush of new growth at the tip. I don't know weather to air layer or treat as cutting. It's quite thick, but I don't think too thick. I'll try for a photo and measurement tomorrow.

If you read through you would have noted that pup has successfully done 3 and 4 cm cuttings (diameter I assume).
Having said this I would also assume that an air layer is potentially the safer / more reliable option.
Air layer is a lot more work though!

I have airlayered branches up to 50cm but never had a cutting be successful
If you have access to the tree to put layers on then i will always do that to ensure success.

Thank you both for the response.

As the tree has been allowed to grow unattended for some 16 yrs, there is a lot of dead wood that I've started stripping out, but also a lot of new growth so I might try both options.

Since this is a family forum I'm just going to

Hi all. When I saw the photo of pups bottlebrush bonsai my mouth dropped. I have to have of my own. So I took 5 cuttings off a very mature bottlebrush and I used cutting gel for them and I put them in 1 pot together with a plastic bag over the top and I spray them 2 times a day as brisbane is having a heat wave. Is there anything else I can do to succeed at rooting 1 of the cuttings? They don't seem to have wilted yet.
