I think you are on to something there matlea, Rereading my post, I do think that it may actually be better to leave some extra branches when you do cut it back sometime in the warmer weather.matlea wrote: I wasn't going to trim any branches just yet as I was worried it might slow the tree down (especially with this cold wet weather) and wait for around spring time? The reason being that the extra branches will fuel more growth and may also help to shorten internodes on final branches by distributing the plants energy.
I would try to identify future final branches (that will be cut back) though so that you can distinguish between growth you want to work with and growth that is there for the plants well being. Things may also change styling wise in the future so it is good to have some extra options open at this stage.
My Lilly Pilly is currently in an active period of growth.
