The Yarralumla nursery (here in Canberra) sells them for about $25 in a 200mm pot. and $5 for a tubestock. They collect the seeds from the one outside the War Memorial and grow them on. Don't know if they deliver but they have a website so just google them.

anyone coming up to Bonsai by the harbour and can bring one for me?

Historical stories often have interesting twists, and that of the 'Lone pine' is no exception.

It appears that the single tree at the ANZAC battle site at Gallipoli is Pinus brutia, the Turkish or Calabrian pine. It is also a very much valued timber tree in the NE Mediterranean area.

Cones on the ground at the battle site appear to have come from slashed pine branches brought in for camouflage, and came from the closely related Pinus halepensis, or Aleppo pine. It does not form good timber and comes from generally a bit further west, though overlapping in range with the Turkish pine.

Both species are called 'Lone Pine' in Australia and the niceties of plant taxonomy are not really an issue there. In the past, some taxonomists have treated them as all one species, though later studies have tended to treat them as two species.
