It has so much character that you will need to look and listen to it for a while before deciding on a direction. Gaining height in the canopy wasn't my first idea, I would be inclined to develop form and structure in the secondary branches..

Very nice Fig you have there with a great history. Would be a pleasure to have a tree like this on my benches.

I would however be pruning the main left branch back as it is getting too strong for the tree. I love the proportion this tree has know, and would maintain it by regular tip pruning and pruning the airial roots back just below soil level regularly to also maintain thickness. It will also incourage more roots from other places. I wouldn't get too much height, just to a shallow umbrella so it has a curve to the outline.

I also love the ferns. Hard part is keeping the fronds small.

Hi Guys Thanks for the feedback all coments are very helpfull. Here is a pic of the tree I took on the weekend the tree seems to be moving along well. It has well and trully filled the new pot with new roots to the point that during February I removed 12 Arials that were coming down of the front left branch that I am trying to limit growth on.It also loves its new position on my benches out in the back yard.Cant wait till Spring to work on the tree further.
