I remember Vance Wood very well, from when he first appeared on the old Garden Web, I think it was in '98. Didn't they call him The Mugo Man? I remember also the pitched battles he had with some people in the first years, especially with Reiner Goebel from Canada. Maybe I enjoyed those so much that I forgot to pay attention to his advice re: Mugo. Now I'm paying the price for it. Anyway, my first Mugo was only bought in 2001.

Another achievement of great proportion. Well done mate!

I've never worked on a Mugo so I know nothing about this species, so you can understand my thoughts that a root prune right before a flush of growth makes sense haha. Glad it worked out for you but I guess when you know the way the trip seems shorter.

Yep the mugo man, oh yes there has been a doozy or 2 or 3 with Vance in the past. How ever when it comes to garden centre mugos he knows what he is talking about horticulturally !!! The variety Petula is the best for bonsai in his opinion. Then you got the European boys with their mountain mugos and that is a whole other level !!!

Thanks Mo Yes a root chop is always a good time b4 a flush. Just certain plants then rather warmer temps to recover !!!

I would not dare repotting non-natives mid-December. Thank you for the info and the demo. I will follow this with great interest. I am still not getting my head around this 75% thing yet! I have killed several mugos years ago

Viet all the best to your family too !!! White pine and scotts also like mid DEC. I have killed a couple of mugos too. Another almost trying to repot and style in Autumn. But aye dont jinx me now !!! However its not the 75% you need to worry about its how good is the 25% remaining ???

The mugo is coming along nicely but I really want to see it from a few more angles since in the bark is a bit hard.

A little over 2 weeks now and yes there has been some worrying moments. A little too cold or hard and harsh wind mixed in with what should have been a warm to hot summer by now ??? Yep well thats Melbourne for you... None the less success is mine amongst a little trauma there is also new growth top to bottom !!!
All in all good shape all over !!!
And some different angles for Matt. Issues need to addressed in the back of the tree, it is certainly not a 360 tree yet. I do look forward to seeing if i can pop some new branches after its next thinning and styling, probaby a year away now...
