Jow, I've found plain old pool acid and a toothbrush do wonders on calcium scale. Just keep it off everything else!

Well I don't know if it's patina for sure, but if it is it's too late to turn back now. I started scrubbing it off and it just left scratch marks. It wasn't dark grime by the way, sort of like the butter mixed with dirt. If it was patina then I scratched through it already so I'll try get it all off. Not really sure if that's a good idea, but it's not like I payed a lot of money for it (probably equates to about a dollar or two). Thanks for the discussion about patina, there was some useful information posted so thanks guys!
