Re: [WANTED] Blue Decorated Pots

Post by Bretts »

Hi Val,
Thanks for the tips. I will dry this pot slow and maybe even do it slower than I normally do as it is bigger than I usually do. Another potter has suggested using damp newspaper to slow the drying even more.

As usual I have a varied peer group when it comes to pottery. And it is the same guy my mate Pol that throws the biggest spanner in the works. The ladies that first taught me had me do everything nice and slow. Then Pol started doing Pottery again and he would bash and punch a pot out in 5 minutes and pop it on the shelf drying in full air :o Erin pottery will take 6 weeks to dry a pot befotre firing. I vary my care depending on the form of the pot and ofcourse the type of clay but I am a novice.
I am glad I took the time to learn to get a pot straight first and also glad that there is more than one way.
Thanks again

I guess I should make a bat for this when firing too. :?:

When you say "make a bat" do you mean a flat sheet of clay to put below the base, inside the feet? If so, that's probably a good idea, to stop it sagging or warping in the firing. I have had a lot of trouble with pots sagging and or warping during firing, so I sometimes put pieces of the same clay underneath, some in the middle and some between the feet. I cut the pieces from the same strips of clay I've cut the feet from, so same thickness, but the feet I join with slip, and the other pieces I just sit in place and make sure they don't join. It seems to work, but is a lot of fiddling around to place correctly every time pot is moved, and can be tricky for a glaze firing as one would have glaze right down to the edge of the pot, and possibly partly over the feet, so have to be careful that the prop pieces do not get joined on by glaze, but are still positioned well enough to give the support. A pain, but possible. Good luck! Let me know if you mean something different. And let me know how you go and what works for you. cheers, Val

Thanks again Vgarth

Well after lots of umming and arrring and thoughts of leaving the pot with no decoration :palm: I am happy enough with my effort.
Looking at the picture I might add a little more here and there but it is away resting again for today. Might put the feet on tomorrow :fc:

Thanks Val, I am not so optimistic but I am sure it will do the job if I get the glaze right and it does not crack or warp :fc:

Sorry Guys I made this one for myself but if it cracks I will let youse fight over it.

Maybe if I get better at it I can make a few for a price people can afford
I think the chance of this one cracking has gotten worse as this is porcelineous clay body. Not what I usually use. It shrinks more than say a red clay and I think that would mean it has more chance of cracking. Might need a few more crossed fingers :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc:

Feet on now I will give it a slow 6 weeks to dry before it comes out of the plastic

Here you are Bretts. Three inspirations from the 1977 Kokofu. These books are a great inspirational source and i am glad i purchased them. I am sure they would be very old being in the Kokofu but arent they glorious. Oh..and if we breached copyright it is your fault. Trees aint bad either.

Hi Bretts,
your pot looks even more magnificent with its feet on. I'm super impressed at how beautifully smooth the side faces, and the top edge are. My attempts are much worse! Dinted adn bruised everywhwere. I really really hope for you that it doesn't crack at any stage. I find hand building so slow (compared to throwing) that I don't see how anyone can make hand-built pots and sell them affordably. (But maybe I'm just a really bad hand builder.) '
I also enjoyed looking at the other pot pics just posted - they are beautiful and inspiring. But I just about think your decoration outdoes theirs, it's so elegant.
Best of luck,
Val
