Re: Desert rose
Hi Angus, Good luck with your desert rose. I know of a few people in the club who grow them here in Brisbane and have a reasonable success. They do seem to like a warm climate and not too much water. As a personal viewpoint I must say that I do not like them as a bonsai subject. I tend to put them in the cactus and succulent bracket and I feel that there is a much better selection of trees for bonsai than this. I must be too much of a traditionalist but I cant see the beauty in them that a lot of other prople do. However good luck with them and keep them warm and dry

Re: Desert rose
i recently purchased this small desert rose to get abit of colour as the majority of bonsai i have are junis and maples, will make me happy when i see a flower on it

ive read somewhere they love small pots as the pots dry up quick and they need little to know work as they can look after themselves so im off to a good start hopefully

Bugger me stick I thought you said you bought one, didn't realise you bought one nursery!!!
I hope that's not in Sydney or my credit card may get a work out!
Thanks for all the valuable feedback

Re: Desert rose
I have two Desert Roses, one pink and the other red. These are still in their black pots as purchased. They don't like the cold. I never water them in winter and put them under cover. They are susceptible to rot. Good luck!

Re: Desert rose
This is one of the pics from Vietnam. The tree is about 1400mm high and was in one of the local parks. (great that no one takes them over there). There were also alot of other smaller ones on sidewalks in peoples front yards, in front of shops etc. They do look nice in flower.

Re: Desert rose
I saw a nice specimen over at flower power on narellan rd only a week ago, just round the corner for you. Definately worth a look if you're chasing one.

Re: Desert rose
Gol that's what sparked my interest!!! I'd seen just about every plant in that nursery until they came in. I ended up getting 5 starters online, and will be also getting some seeds (there are some amazing colours/varieties).

Re: Desert rose
A nursery in Brisbane called Fong Ping Orchids imports hundreds of varieties including many grafted, variegated foliage and miniature flowered varieties. I can't find a website for them, only a mention about orchid suppliers. Google"Adenium cultivars" to see the incredible selection available. Or click on this link.

To my way of thinking they cannot be classified as true bonsai material as they are a caudiciform, desert succulent that can't be trained to any great degree in the Bonsai way but make a very attractive, unusual potted plant anyway.

Re: Desert rose
I was just over in bali at the now closed bonsai cafe, the artist that worked there was growing many as bonsai and had some method to training them.
But even if there not classed as a true bonsai I still want one.
There are a few photos of them under my bali bonsai cafe post if you want to have a look.
Ps
I realy do want one
