Wisteria Seed Progression

Ahh the curse of the amateur. The seedling never made it to the stage of a tree. Dead as a toothpick now.

Last year we had an athletics carnival on in Wagga Wagga, and on the way home we all stopped at "The Dog on the Tucker Box" 5 miles from Gundagai , and outside the shop there is a HUUUUGGGGGEEEE wisteria, that was laden with seed pods.

I collected a few, but never planted them but assume that every year around March if you drop by it will have plenty more.

or else just find an old wisteria in someones garden, and see if they are seeding at that time of the year.
( there is a very old one) on the corner of Victoria Rd and Wharfe rd West Ryde, and the Azalea gardens in Caringbah have som really old ones on the front fence.

Absolutely Ken, Most wisteria set seed, often in abundance. You just have to look. Plenty of feral ones in the creeks and gullies around Sydney from memory. It is possible that some may still have pods even this late in the season. My experience is also very easy to grow from seed.

Any idea where I can find a matureish wisteria tree in melbourne? Havn't seen one in my 21 odd years here

Wisteria from seed take a very long time to flower, 15-20 years. It is much better to strike cuttings from wood which has already flowered, even cuttings from wood which hasn't flowered will also take many years to do so.
MoGanic, I was at a wholesaler on tuesday and saw some nicely grown wisteria on one trunk thick with flower buds, would not call them mature but they had reasonable trunks and good movement.

Can yo stretch your memory to what creeks? If you can then I willgo and collect them
none of the creeks near me have any

Sorry Ken. I do not know Sydney well enough to even guess and i do not get there very often. I thought it was somewhere out to the North and west?? Lots of hills and private schools???
It is also possible that they were not actually wisteria. Sorry if I got your hopes up unduly.

CraigW is absolutely correct about wisteria seedlings being reluctant to flower. I think we have mentioned this before. Only grow wisteria seed if you really must. If you want flowering plants grow cuttings which will flower in a few years. My seedling wisteria bonsai is about 30 years old and has flowered once. A seedling in the garden flowered last year at only 7 years old.

Seedlings that are one to two years old are good for grafting older flowering wood onto them.

I tried budding them on year but all failed. I'll have to try grafting if I can find a good variety somewhere.
Seedlings do produce a thick trunk base more quickly than cuttings.
