Thanks, I like it too!
Here's this tree as of today, I've let it grow since receiving it. I'll let it grow for a few more weeks before cutting it back hard.

Hey mate,
I suppose for a traditional bonsai you'd have to lose that root, but in the long run its your tree, do whats pleasing on your eyes. That root has crazy character and to remove it would leave the dilema of blending the scar in to look natural, which i thought was imperative to bonsai.
Either way its great to see new growth being pushed, look forward to updates.

Thanks! It really is just a fugly root that IMO needs to go. It's gone in the virt, at least, and the base in the virt looks very solid. I just really hate how it turns the way it does and it bothers me, so it needs to go
Here are a few more shots, just because I really like this tree

I really like the tree too and the virt is superb
the root has to go as it does look Fugly
the sooner you do it the sooner the scar will heal

I assume removing this root probably wouldn't slow this tree down too much....

Being the end of your summer depend on the amount of growing time you have. Where I am here i certainly would take it off now, but not disturb the other roots much.
As you grow yours under lights thru winter you shodu be fine to do anytime

Thanks Ken, that's what I thought. We've got another good month or so of growing season here, so I'm thinking it'd still be just fine to remove the root, tomorrow.

Is it possible to remove the fat portion to the right in the middle photo and then lever/ wire/ jack the smaller section away from the other roots ? I think that would be an improvement
