The second virtual is the way to go, more powerful. Don't go taller, keep the focus near the base.
Please use wire on this tree, it deserves to be treated well! Haha

I think the trunk needs to be shortened and some branches grown in a broom style.

Hi, yeah I used to use a lot of wire but don't bother any more, the branches are that stiff you can only wire them when they are a couple of mm thick anyway, I just use clip and grow on olives now, I still wire the shoots sometimes where they come out of the trunk to get them pointing downwards but thats about it, this stump is great in that its already got some secondary branches to use that are in the right places, normally I'd cut everything off and start again.

ozzy is right i find olives branches more then 3-4mm thick difficult to wire with out leaving wire marks or other damage

so i wire mine when young as well a mix of clip an grow an wire seems to work well

Clip and grow takes longer but produces a far superior and natural looking end result, you wiring crazy nuts out there that like to spend all day wrapping your branches in copper might be better off taking up sculpturing

To Quote Ryan Neil "wire is our paint brush". There is a long list of plants which can only be wired on the new growth azalea and pyracantha would be a couple of the more obvious ones.

Pines would be another wire only tree, I have some here with long leggy branches with no low buds that have to be wired, I see a lot of wiring were clip and grow would have been better.
