That's exactly what I did just now coupled with the part defoliation.
Depending on the results and my perception of the tree's strength I may do another trim/defoliate this year.

I did try and strike the cutting (which was hardwood and around pencil thick) but unfortunately it didn't take.
Looked promising for a very long time but didn't quite pull through.

I'm very happy with the pot as well it suits well through all seasons IMO.

Updated pic now it has leafed out...
Upon consideration this process has gone reasonably well and I've achieved a goal of some ramification.
Not 100% sure if I'll try for another defoliation this season.

A major flaw of this tree is the lack of Nebari which I'd very much like to work on ASAP.
There is a big bulbous knuckle at the base which although improves the base width it doesn't look that attractive to the naked eye.
My intent is to use this width in an attempt to create a new radial root system at about the soil line...

I'd be interested to hear people's views on potentially setting this up for a ground layer once things get a fraction cooler?
