Someone I was talking to on the gold coast told me he had to water twice a day, pines that were potted in just diatomite, but that they grew really well, and that was in spring time.

I do find diatomite a drier mix but it is easy to wet and rewet and no root rot problems as with finer mixes. Its a great component.
Don't use too high a % ; no matter what you hear.
