Mojo, I believe that is Rod Lovett's Elm ?

Brett, you've done a great job with your ROR. I see a lot of C. Elm's in the stock department of nurseries up my way and most are quite unimpressive becasue the size and quality of rock is disappointing. I think Rod's tree is something to strive for, as the rock is in more proportion to the tree. As I see it, the general consensus of ROR is a tree growing on a cliffside, mostly in a semi-cascade fashion. Therefore you don't want the tree to melt and swallow the rock, as in the case of a lot of Ficus species.

Again, I like your composition and I wouldn't worry too much about the roots. As is, the placement of roots is very pleasing and can only improve in the coming seasons.

Thanks for posting that one Ray. It is turning into a great example. It looks like the roots are going to pull in real tight on the first couple of pics but true to elm form they seem to have lifted out a little in the last pic. Damn you elm tree

I have 2 Trident Maple root over rock and both grown from seed in 2005, and grown in tubes to lenghen the roots

this one is an slating style sort of thing

the other one is here.
The top got broken off by a cat ( not mine) jumping of the fence and so is being regrown.

Last time Peter Adams was here he came to school one night and drew sketches of it for me.

The roots can always be bound back onto the rock. As you know Elm roots are quite pliable.

It is something I thought about but not seriously

I wouldn't worry about the roots not flattening out yet its way too soon for that to happen, give it a few more years.
My ror tridents which have been on rocks for nearly 20 years are just showing signs of beginning to meld in with the rock.

You'd be able to find that red volcanic rock at most aquarium/pet shops that have aquascaping supplies, hope this helps.

If the tree is on the red rock long enough and is a strong rooting tree this is what happens. With a less powerful tree it is fine. As in the C,elm

Hi Craig, If a tree is set right on the rock the right species of tree such as the trident will meld onto the rock within a couple of years in the ground.
